Do my thoughts really cause harm to my body?

As I write this, I’ve been diagnosed with Shingles; a re-activation of the chicken pox virus. I’ve had chicken pox as a child and apparently the virus lies dormant in the body. The virus can’t give you chicken pox again, but when it gets reactivated, you get something called Shingles. Nothing serious. I’ll get better in a few weeks, but the rashes are extremely itchy and supposedly painful (I haven’t gotten to the pain stage yet).

I was wondering, how the hell did I get shingles. Of course this is the first time I’m hearing about it. I picked up the You can Heal your life book by Louise Hay, to see if she has shingles listed in her ‘The List’ chapter. For those who don’t know, Louise Hay believes that the root cause for all diseases lie in the mind. While I like Louise Hay, and I frequently use her affirmations, my belief isn’t strong enough yet on using it as a remedy for diseases. She did have an affirmation for Shingles; “I am relaxed and peaceful as I trust the flow of life. All is well in my world.” I let made sense to me. For the past few weeks, I’ve been extremely stressed about work. I’ve been jittery and nervous for no reason. I’ve been having this unexplainable uneasiness for days together. With that context, the affirmation made completely sense. I’m wondering if I did cause the virus to flare up. Apparently, Shingles affects the nerves and it can take months for the nerves to heal. I’m going to double down on the affirmation. Let’s see how it goes. Even if it does not cure Shingles, I do believe in the power of affirmations to course correct my self-deprecating thoughts, and the affirmation hits the nail when it comes to how jittery I’ve been feeling the past few weeks. Of course, I’m also dosed-up on anti-viral medication, so that’s definitely going to help. 🙂
