A child’s stare (poem)

A child sees without thinking

True seeing. Photo by Seven Shooter on Unsplash.

That stare devoid of blinks.
Curiosity dripping from his cheeks.
Blank stare with no emotions.
What’s going on in his mind, I wonder…
Is he thinking…who is this awkward looking human?
Is he speculating if I’m a good or a bad guy?
Is he deciding whether he should smile at me?
What’s going on in his mind, I wonder…
Is he wondering whether there’s any point in engaging with me; whether he’ll get any goodies?
Is he wondering what I am thinking about him?
He continues to stare at me confidently, while I awkwardly try to make faces to get him to smile.
Still no smile. Just a blank stare.
What’s going on in his mind, I wonder…
I try to turn my head away even as he continues to stare.
I turn back to look at him after a few seconds.
He’s now looking at someone’s handbag. |
A burst of understanding hits me.
He’s not thinking at all.
He’s the only one who’s truly seeing.
