A randomly planned one-night trip to Calcutta with no agenda, turned out to be one of the most beautiful experiences. The food, Kali in Dakshineshwar and Kali Ghat, and the peace at Belur Math; for a one-day trip, it was one of the most satisfying breaks.
The mother at Kali Ghat had a deep impact on me. I just could not forget her face for a long time after I saw her. Whenever I closed my eyes, I could only see her. Despite the priests trying to milk the maximum money they can in the name of Kali, when you see her from 1-feet away, it is a surreal experience. I felt like writing a poem to express how I was feeling. This is in my mother tongue, Tamil, as that’s how it came to my mind, but I’ve translated it in English as well (see below the Tamil version).
உன் குழந்தை கேட்க்கிறேனம்மா
உன் முகம் மரவேனம்மா
உன் அன்பே எனக்குத்துணையம்மா
என்னோடு எப்போழுதும் இருப்பாயம்மா

உன் முகம் நான் என்றும் மரவேனம்மா.

காமம், குறோதம், அன்பு, பண்பு, அஹங்காரம்
அனைத்தும் உனக்கே சரணாகதியம்மா

என்னை உன்னில் ஒருநிலைப்படுத்துவாயம்மா
உன்னை நேறில் காண்பதர்க்கீடியில்லையம்மா
ஒருமுறை கண்டுவிட்டால் உன்முகம் மரவாதம்மா

கண்களை மூடினால் உன்முகமே தெரியவேண்டும் அம்மா
